Educate Your Colleagues & Classmates

  • Become knowledgeable yourself about LGBTQ+ issues
  • Make your colleagues aware of all the resources available for and about LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Focus on collection development in this area.
  • Update colleagues on new materials published about LGBTQ+ issues (See ALA's GLBT Round Table)

Improve Access to LGBTQ+ Materials

  • Do not ignore the LGBT community, in fact, do the opposite and highlight materials through special displays, such as a Pride Month Display
  • Compile & Distribute Handouts, which I will translate as compile and raise awareness of websites such as this one that have LGBTQ+ resources in a centralized location

Handouts & Resource Sites

  • Compile ongoing booklists highlighting new and popular reading for the LGBTQ+ community
  • Incorporate study guides into the library's resources and website and hold bibliographic instruction classes on the topic

External Information Resources

  • Keep a list of external resources for LGBTQ+ patrons so that other organizations can be reached/accessed
  • This site has a page of links to external organizations!

Meeting Space

  • Invite LGBTQ+ organizations to use the library as a meeting space (in appropriate group locations of course)
  • This will help raise visibility and make students aware there are groups of which they can be a part.

Promote the Library

  • Reach out to Campus LGBTQ+ organizations to make them aware of the library's LGBTQ+ resources and available meeting spaces

Inclusive Programming

  • Hold information sessions about using the library specifically geared towards LGBTQ+ students
  • This will not only welcome the LGBTQ+ community, but will promote the library in general.

Professional Networking

  • As a librarian, it is important to make professional connections with other LGBTQ+ librarians and allies.
  • This is also true for students and other professions!
  • Students in all majors use the library, so it is an excellent place to promote community and make lasting connections.
